Only a short 30-minute fast boat ride from Kuala Besut, this backpacker getaway is the perfect island to escape to as you make your way through peninsular Malaysia. Days can easily turn into weeks, as we quickly discovered after exploring the island for a few days (we ended up extending our stay from 4 to 7 days). “No hurry no worry” should be the catch phrase of Kecil as most people spend their days diving and snorkeling in the crystal clear water and lounging around soaking up the sun on the white sandy beaches. With our first year of full-time travel, I’ve decided to go with the flow more and be a little less of a control freak! As such I’ve set very few “rules”. One that I do have though, is that even if we don’t know our itinerary or how long we plan on staying in a given place I want one night of lodging booked before we arrive. From there we can figure out what we want to do next, but the one night is sort of a safety net.

After spending two days (which really felt like three since we’d arrived at 7am after taking a 10 hour night bus from Mersing) in Kuala Terengganu enjoying the air-conditioning at the Space Inn, the food in China Town, getting some exercise by the bay, and the Monitor Lizards we found in the drains it was time to explore a new place.
